Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a technique that uses a special device to induce tiny microtears in your skin to boost collagen and elastin production with minimal downtime.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Aesthetic benefits associated with microneedling at the Center for Dermatology include:

  • Diminished acne scarring
  • Fewer lines and wrinkles
  • Reduced pores
  • Improved skin textures
  • Reduced stretch marks
  • Tighter, toned skin
  • Skin revitalization

Is microneedling right for me?

To find out if microneedling is the right procedure for you, the Center for Dermatology team examines your skin and reviews your medical history. If you are a candidate for microneedling therapy, you will be scheduled for a follow-up appointment for treatment.

What happens during microneedling?

During microneedling, your provider will glide a Collagen P.I.N. device that utilizes a sterile disposable needle cartridge holding 36 microneedles across your skin. This device induces microtears at the desired depth that’s right for your skin. Microneedling treatment typically lasts 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Will microneedling hurt?

Prior to the treatment, a team member at the Center for Dermatology will first clean your skin and apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area to make each procedure feel comfortable.

What should I expect after treatment?

After microneedling, there’s minimal downtime so you can resume normal activities right away. Some redness and swelling at the treatment site is normal and expected. You can apply ice or take over-the-counter pain relievers to optimize comfort while your skin heals. Make sure to protect your skin from the sun. A post-treatment skin care regimen will be recommended based on your individual needs.

The Center for Dermatology team may recommend a series of microneedling sessions or periodic maintenance treatments to help you achieve the best results. Typically, 3-6 treatments are recommended at 4-6 week intervals. Most patients report seeing results in as little as 1-2 weeks after the first treatment, but this can vary based on the health of your skin and the condition being treated.

Combining Microneedling with PRP

PRP treatment can be combined with microneedling to utilize platelet-rich plasma from your own blood. PRP helps to provide additional growth factors to your skin and can improve the benefits of microneedling.

 Combining Microneedling with Chemical Peels

In some instances, certain chemical peels may also be utilized with microneedling to help enhance your results.
