PRP for Aesthetics

Are you looking for a skin rejuvenation treatment with minimal downtime or a non-surgical alternative to dermal fillers? The Center for Dermatology is now offering platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) for patients looking to improve the overall tone and texture of their skin. What is platelet rich plasma (PRP)?

Platelet rich plasma is plasma with five to ten times the amount of platelets found in normal circulating blood. When used for aesthetic purposes, platelet rich plasma is used to rejuvenate the collagen within the dermis of the skin.

This regenerative therapy is known as an autologous treatment because the patient’s own blood is used to rejuvenate the treated area. The treatment is performed by drawing some of the patient’s then separating and purifying it with special techniques and instruments. The platelet rich plasma is then re-injected in small amounts into the dermal layer of the skin in the treatment area. The growth factors found in platelets promotes local tissue growth and the permanent repair of damaged tissues. Platelet rich plasma helps repair existing collagen tissue and generate new collagen increasing the skin’s ability to retain moisture and reducing the visible signs of aging.

There are three phases of collagen repair stimulated by platelet rich plasma therapy:

  • Inflammation: This first phase lasts for approximately three days and is when the growth factors found in PRP are released.
  • Proliferation: Growth factors flood the areas in need of healing and repair and form new blood vessels and capillaries.
  • Remodeling: The rejuvenated and newly created collagen strengthen the skin, resulting in the improvement in scarring, skin lines, and wrinkles. The increased presence of collagen improves the overall health and quality of the skin. This phase takes approximately three months to complete.

When will I see results?

Patients will begin to see improvement in skin tone and texture within three weeks of PRP injections. Patients can see improvement in skin quality for up to three months following an injection session.

PRP therapy can be used to treat:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne and acne scars
  • Bags and dark circles under the eyes
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Neck wrinkles

Are there any side effects to PRP therapy?

There are no adverse reactions to platelet rich plasma treatments because the injection is autologous and the platelets fight off infection. Some patients may experience some tenderness, mild swelling, or bruising at the injection area immediately following the treatment. This side effect is temporary and typically subsides within a few days of the injection session.
