PRP for Hair Restoration

Hair loss can be an emotional experience for many people and can be a source of insecurity, but many people avoid hair restoration treatments because they involve painful surgeries and extensive recovery periods. The Center of Dermatology offers platelet rich plasma therapy for hair restoration as a non-surgical treatment option to help strengthen weak hair follicles and reduce hair loss.

What causes hair loss?

Hair loss occurs when the hair follicles weaken, which results in the cease of hair production. For men, hair loss or hair thinning is typically hereditary and is triggered by the DHT hormone, which causes the hair follicles to shrink and weaken. The shrinking of the hair follicles causes hair to thin or the formation of bald patches on the scalp. Hair loss in women can be hereditary, but can also be influenced by poor nutrition, stress, aging, social and lifestyle factors, or poor hair care.

What is platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy for hair restoration?

Platelet rich plasma therapy for hair restoration is a non-surgical treatment that involves injecting plasma with three to five times the amount of platelets found in normal circulating blood into specific areas to stimulate and strengthen hair follicles. PRP therapy for hair restoration is considered an autologous treatment because the PRP injection is derived from the patient’s blood. Platelet rich plasma helps stimulate the hair follicles and encourages hair growth, and helps reverse the effects of thinning hair and baldness.

When will I see results?

Results of PRP therapy for hair restoration can typically be seen three to six months after treatment. Results may vary depending on the condition of hair loss prior to treatment. PRP therapy for hair restoration works best on thinning hair.

Is there any downtime?

Platelet rich plasma therapy is a minimally-invasive treatment and has no downtime associated with it. Most patients are typically able to immediately return to normal activities.

Are there any side effects to platelet rich plasma treatments?

Because platelet rich plasma treatments are comprised of the patient’s own blood, there is virtually no chance of adverse reactions. Patients may experience some scalp tenderness in the days following a PRP treatment. Pain can typically be managed with over-the- counter medication and usually subsides within a few days of the treatment.
